Aurora Theater

08 January 2014

If you’re looking for something to do on a weekend in Saint Petersburg, then why not check out the city’s unique movie scene? The city actually has quite a few cinemas to choose from, but if you want a real SPB experience, then one of the best theaters to visit is the historic Aurora Theater(Аврора Кинотеатр). First opened in 1913, the Aurora is the oldest movie theater in the city and has been operating almost none stop (even during the 900 day siege of Leningrad) ever since.

Located right on Nevsky Prospekt, the theater is very centrally located; however, the building is now tucked away from view on the street behind other buildings. But as you walk through the passageway, you will quickly recognize the theater’s classic charm that reminds you of the golden age of silent cinema. Thanks to recent renovations, the theater has kept its classic interior as well, but also now has the most up to date theater projection and sound equipment in its very large viewing hall.

As for the movies themselves, the theater usually plays more alternative and foreign films, often times in their original languages even. Prices are usually quite reasonable but depend on each film.

If you are looking for a unique setting to see your next movie, enjoy foreign and indie films or just want to do something fun for the weekend, then the Aurora Theater is a great place to find what you are looking for!
