Not Just Another Breakfast Cafe in Moscow

The perks of staying with a Muscovite (and one of my best friends) is the local food knowledge they can share. This weekend, my friend took me to her favourite breakfast spot in Moscow – the aptly named Breakfast Cafe. This small cafe is on Malaya Nikinskaya Ulitsa, around 10 mins walk from either Tverskaya or Arbatskaya Metro stations.

Despite the small size of the cafe, the menu is both varied and exciting. The food was excellent.

Drinks

We both chose coffees, as we had both gotten out of bed pretty early for a Sunday in order to get to our reserved table. These were no ordinary coffees however. I had a ‘Winnie Pooh’ which was a honey-maple latte topped with whipped cream and a waffle whereas my friend chose her favourite coffee ‘Toasted’ – a cinnamon latte with whipped cream, marshmallows and chocolate pieces. You can also choose from a range of lemonades, smoothies and regular teas and coffees too.

Breakfast Cafe has enough dishes on their menu to suit anyone’s taste – even your fussiest friend! Despite being a self confessed brunch lover, I am not the biggest fan of eggs, and yet I found there was still a lot for me to choose from too. The menu is divided into sections: healthy morning, dishes with eggs, salads, bruschetti, soups and my personal favourite: happy morning. This section contains all of the sweet treats which the cafe is best known for. Their pancakes were wonderful! I went for the classic pancakes topped with a whoopie cookie and chocolate sauce, where as my much more sensible friend chose eggs with parma ham, sundried tomatoes and avocado toasts. She also recommended the blueberry pancakes, which are apparently completely submerged in white chocolate.

When to go?

I would advise a trip to Breakfast Cafe as soon as possible! If you are spending some time in Moscow, then it is a wonderful place to get a weekend started in the right way. A word of warning however, the small size and cozy feel of the cafe comes at the price of a lot of table spaces, so if you have your heart set on eating your weight in pancakes then it is advisable to book in advance, especially at the weekend!

It is open 8am-11pm, Monday-Sunday.

Hi! I'm Megan, a university student from the UK, currently studying Russian at Liden & Denz Language Centre in Moscow. My parents live in a small village in Kent, but I go to university in London. I started learning Russian just nine months ago, but I never dreamed I would be spending summer in Moscow studying it! I study history at university, where I have become very interested in Russian history, especially Peter the Great, the Decembrists and Siberia throughout Russian history, so I hope to write about everyday history in the city while I am here. My month in Moscow is the perfect way to absorb as much Russian culture and history as possible, so I can go back to university ready for my final year and to write my dissertation on Siberian Exiles in 17th Century. Outside the classroom, I enjoy playing sports - I have fenced for England and Great Britain and I am captain of the LSE Women’s Basketball Team - and I also love to travel. My favourite places (aside from Moscow of course!) have been Cape Town, for its immense natural beauty, and Budapest, for its fun atmosphere! I love to try local food wherever I go, so I hope to be blogging about the culinary delights of Moscow during my stay here.
