How I speed up reading classical Russian literature

If you love to read classical Russian literature in the original (like I do), Wiki Слово (WikiWord) is one of those rare apps that feels genuinely indispensable. It’s an “advanced reader” of Russian Wiktionary and, according to the developer, covers over 450,000 entries, bringing together definitions, audio for correct pronounication, grammar, word forms, synonyms/antonyms, examples taken from Russian classical literature (!), etymology, and even translations to German and English, where applicable.

If you read your books online, you can quickly pull in a word from other apps (clipboard / drag & drop) to Wiki Слово to speed up the process.

The example in this screenshot adds literary quotes of writer Alexey Tolstoy and historian Nikolay Karamzin. Priceless!

What makes it app so valuable is its ease of use and depth: you can look up a word and immediately get the kind of context a normal dictionary often misses (forms, usage examples, set phrases). If you want it to work on the go, there’s an offline mode via in-app purchase which still keeps the overall cost very reasonable for how much it improves the reading experience. So far available only for iPhones/iPads.

What is your favourite Russian translation app? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
