XV International Winter Festival Arts Square “Площадь искусств”
Dear lovers of classical music, be prepared: a great event will be held in St. Petersburg soon. One of the best known concert halls will host again, for the 15th time, the most outstanding foreign and Russian musicians. And this great event is quite close: On 14th December, in the Grand Hall (Большой зал) of the Philarmonia (Филормония), 15th International Music Festival of Arts Square Площадь Искусств will open and bring together some of the most interesting performances.
This prestigious Russian music festival was firstly opened in 1999, on the initiative of Maestro Temirkanov, artistic director of the St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic. Since then, every year in December, the Arts Square lights up with the Winter Festival, giving visitors the opportunity to experience different artistic interpretations.
This year the International Winter Festival will be held from 14th till 25th December and has invited the best musicians of the world – interpreters of music of different eras, genres and styles. Among them – the winners of the Grammy award, Joshua Bell and the Berlin Academy for Early Music, pianist Boris Berezovsky, and Alexei Lyubimov and German Ensemble Recherche, Alexander Dmitriev, Nikolai Alekseev and Vladimir Jurowski who will come to Saint Petersburg for the first time together with the Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra.
For the 450th Shakespeare’s anniversary, Сон в летнюю ночь (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) will be performed at theatre Театр им. В.Ф. Комиссаржевской (Komissarsgevskoj), while, for the young listener, Снеговика (The Snowman) is scheduled for the 21st Decemeber, in the Grand Hall. Adults instead, can enjoy both listening and watching Планеты (Planets) by Holst, since they will even have the possibility to watch the film “The planets – An HD Odyssey”, by Duncan Copp.
One of the most important event of the festival (and of the whole season) is represented by Jonas Kaufmann’s performance – one of the most powerful tenor voice in the world.
