“Великие модернисты” in Moscow. Through the Artists’ Eyes.
14 February 2015

Yesterday, February 13, opened the art exhibition “Великие модернисты. Революция в искусстве” (Great modernist. The revolution in art). This multimedia show is held at Центр дизайна ARTPLAY (ARTPLAY Design Centre) in Moscow and will run until May 31, 2015.

The viewer will be given the opportunity to experience a journey from the exotic primitivism of Gauguin’s landscapes to vibrant colours and deep spirituality in Кандинский (Kandinsky)’s free associations and the radical “Черный квадрат (Cherniy kvadrat)” of Малевич (Malevich) and his “pure art”.

Everywhere in Russia I can’t help myself from breathing art in any place I go. Art, and even more, Russian art it’s a mixture of passion, love and strength which own an exotic charm and grab you deeply and powerfully in a kind of mystic experience. For Russians, art has always be more than representation, it has a soul. If you also feel strong feelings when you get in contact with art, imagine to involve all your senses to explore and learn the artist’s world in a new, exciting way.

Центр дизайна ARTPLAY displays about 1000 artworks of nine most significant artists of Modernism. This was an extremely revolutionary movement that arose in the late 19th and early 20th centuries developed in opposition to Romanticism. Particularly in art, it is based on the idea that it’s not important the object depicted but the way you create the representation. The artists changed the way to look at art and were able to develop their own techniques to create on canvas the representation of their own Worlds. For these reasons we find so many different and original styles in Modernism which are well represented in the Moscow exhibition by the master of Modernism Paul Gauguin, Henri Rousseau, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Gustav Klimt, Paul Signac, Edvard Munch, Amedeo Modigliani and the Russians Василий Кандинский (Vasily Kandinsky) and Казимир Малевич (Kazimir Malevich).

Modernism artworks are fascinating, but sometimes most of their beauty and meanings lie concealed to a first look, for how accurate it is. Thank to digital technologies this great exhibition gives the chance to experience modernists’ masterpieces in a completely new and unexpected way. Every painting is projected all around the viewers even on the floor, and come to life under our eyes while the pictures move in the rhythm of the music in the background. The sound of music brings out colours and shades as the images move through the screens. All the elements in the picture become alive and you feel like you are really into the painting. The aim of this project is that by immersing completely ourselves into this masterpieces we will able to understand the artists’ logic, their own worlds and therefore their paintings.

In the same location there’s a second multimedia exhibition that focuses on the French Impressionists “От Моне до Сезана. Французские импрессионисты” (Monet to Cézanne – The French Impressionists). It is organized by the same Russian company iVision and will be held from February 13 to May 31, 2015 as well. This same multimedia show is taking place in Saint Petersburg and it will be open until March 31, 2015. As for the Moscow exhibition it will be even more impressive and inspiring to see both “Французские импрессионисты” and “Великие модернисты”!
