Who of you doesn’t know it? One is interested in a certain language and you would like to improve it wherever you can – in the train on your way to work or while waiting for the next bus to come. Simply then, if you find a little time. Nowadays, there are innumerable smartphone apps that shall help to improve your vocabulary, but finding the right app for yourself may take a long time. The competition and the number of deals is simply too big. Therefore, I would like to introduce you my two favorite apps that really have helped me the last few years to broaden my Russian knowledge.
Babbel – This app was my first and remains my absolute favorite. It is the application of a German enterprise, which already has around 17 million users worldwide. 2.5 million of it alone in Germany. 2013, it was even honored with the German Education Media Award “Digita”. Firstly, you are going to choose the language you would like to learn and after that, you can find new vocabulary and idioms in numerous courses. Secondly, the grammar also doesn’t come too briefly and is conveyed in a playful way at the same time. There are listening and speaking exercises and a repeat manager, who constantly reminds you to repeat specific learning content. The personal vocabulary gets stored and can be retrieved at any time. Another highlight for me represents the Babbel community in which I was able to apply the things I have learned immediately with people from all over the world.
Duolingo – The second app I would like to introduce you is also called “The iPhone App of the Year 2013”. Duolingo is an Apple subcontractor that already has more than 20 million users worldwide who are regularly improving and refreshing their Russian skills. Besides Russian, you can choose between nine other languages. Pictures make it easier to learn new words that are gradually incorporated into sentences and phrases. Instead of complicated grammar lessons and vocabulary lists, you can find thematically arranged language learning modules. Furthermore, there are exercises for listening and repetition. Gap texts and translations tasks shall help to consolidate the theory you have learned immediately. Regular tests to check your studying progress are offered in addition.
No matter for which application you may decide, the most important thing is that it matches your respective studying type and that you are going to use it regularly to obtain progress.
