Top 5 Iconic Russian comedies
Cinema is one of Russia’s finest arts. Here we present a countdown of Russian Soviet comedies. They have become cult movies in Russia, with many quotes used in everyday conversations.
5) Office Romance (Служебный роман)
Sluzhebny Roman is a soviet movie by Eldar Ryazanov, premiered in 1977. It is the story of a love affair between a single man and his boss. The love story starts as a plan to get a promotion at work, but evolves in true love, after a series of funny ups and downs.
4) Autumn Marathon (Осенний Марафон)
Osenniy Marafon is a comedy-drama directed by Georgiy Daneliya, released in 1979. The protagonist, Andrey, a translator, is divided between his wife and his lover. Each of the two try to change him and become his only woman. A mechanic and two wannabe translators are the most funny characters, who serve as a comic counterpart to the melancholic trio. This creates the bittersweet atmosphere that makes this movie so brilliant.
3) The Diamond Arm (Бриллиантовая рука)
Brilliantovaya Ruka is a film directed by Leonid Gaidai that was first released in 1969. The movie is based on real-life news, and tells the story of Turkish smugglers who try to bring contraband diamonds from Turkey to Russia. The smuggle doesn’t work, and the diamonds finish in the wrong hands. A series of fortunate attempts to get the diamonds back follows, and those tries will make you laugh for the whole film.
2) The Irony of Fate (Ирония судьбы)
Ironiya Sudby is another film by Eldar Ryazanov, premiered in Russian cinemas in 1975. It tells the story of a group of friends who meet at a banya to celebrate New Year’s Eve. The group gets drunk, and many tricks of destiny confuse the relationships between the film characters. The film is a funny rollercoaster of emotions, and his success was so big that even a second part was released in 2007. People in Russia traditionally watch this movie every New Year’s Eve.
1) Operation Y and Shurik’s other adventures (Операция „Ы“ и другие приключения Шурика)
Operatsiya Y is a movie released in 1965, directed by Leonid Gaidai. It is composed by three different segments that shows various adventures of the protagonist, Shurik. The climax is reached in the last part, a “warehouse battle” between Shurik and three men who want to rob the warehouse that Shurik is guarding. With its continuous and unexpected turnarounds, Operation Y is definitely worth a watch.
