Escape to Jelgava: A Perfect Day Trip

Only an hour drive away from Riga, Jelgava is a Latvian wonder. As the largest city in the Zemgale region, Jelgava is renowned for its old architecture and splendid scenery. Last week I had the chance to explore the city and I was left speechless as I stepped on the platform. If you are passionate about Baltic history and great cafes, hang in there for some great suggestions in Jelgava!
Jelgava Palace
Probably the most popular tourist attraction in town is Jelgava Palace. While historically known as Mitau Palace, the building is one of the largest Baroque-style architecture pieces in the region. It dates back to the 18th century when it was designed as a residence for the Dukes of Courland. Throughout history, the palace suffered several damages especially during World War II. Since its final restoration, it has been destined to host the Latvia Academy of Agriculture. For the past 50 years, the palace has witnessed generations of students and new traditions being created. Some worth mentioning are new cobblestones being placed on the main path to celebrate each graduating class.

For those interested in Latvian history, you might choose to stop by the Jelgava History and Art Museum. Only a ten minutes walk from the train station, you will find there thorough collections of art and historical pieces. On the first floor, one can explore old coins as well as ancient jewelry found on the Latvian territory. Although most descriptions are in the Latvian language, you will certainly have a blast! As you move up to the second floor, you will notice the works of Gederts Elias. He is known as one of the most pivotal Latvian painters. When walking around the yard, visitors will feel as if traveling back in time!
Tea House “Silva”
What better way to end the day if not by having a hot drink? Just picture the great variety of cakes instantly charming you with their vivid colors and artistic layering. If it sounds appealing, Tea House “Silva” will exceed your expectations. Located on the river shore, the cafe overlooks the nearby park and surrounding nature. While at your chosen table, take a moment to enjoy its impressive interior design accompanied by numerous windows. Now that you are seated, you will most certainly be taken aback by the cozy ambiance. All around you locals will be enjoying their conversations while savoring sweet treats.
