Recently, I hopped on a train to visit another popular tourist destination in Latvia. Known as Cēsis, the town instantly welcomes you with the mountainous fresh air and great scenery. It is the various nature trails nearby that will certainly make you fall in love. Located a few hours from Riga, Cēsis is indeed the best choice for a day trip! If interested in medieval history and not only, keep reading about how to spend a day in Cēsis.

Cēsis Medieval Castle

At top of the list, we have most probably Cēsis’s main attraction. The Cēsis Medieval Castle was established in the 13th century during the Livonian Crusades. Since then, this historical attraction has been overlooking the May Park in Cēsis. Once you find yourself on top of the hill, you will witness nature unfolding before your eyes. That is why the castle becomes swarmed with tourists especially during summer. Its picturesque ruins reenacts a romantic atmosphere worth of the medieval ages. Nowadays, the Cēsis Medieval Castle can be visited for only a fee of 6 euros. With each purchase, you will also receive a lantern to explore the dark towers. 

Cēsis History and Art Museum

Once you reach the old town, it will be hard to miss the Cēsis History and Art Museum. Founded in 1925, it is considered one the largest museums in Latvia. This attraction is for those with a particular interest in the Baltic region’s history. From works of art to ethnographic objects, you will dive deeper into various historical perks. It is important to note that the museum’ s collection has more than 155 000 items. 

Erglu Cliffs

If you follow the walking trails around Cēsis, you will be amazed by the Erglu Cliffs. This natural wonder is is one of the major nature points in the Gauja National Park.

Currently it is recognized as one of the continuous sandstone bocks in the Baltics. As a result, this makes it a gateaway from the busy city life and relaxing hikes. In this area, you can also enjoy the local plant and bird species. A fun fact to many might also be the origin of the name. It most likel originates from the frequent echos ocurring in the valley.

Latvia is known for its great touristic attractions both in the Baltic as well as internationally. That is why you might find it difficult to plan your trip. With these recommendations, you will spend a memorable day in Cēsis nevertheless.
