Football in Riga? Who would have thought! My Riga FC Experience
Last week, I went to a UEFA Champions League qualifying match in Riga. Riga FC played against FC Ararat-Armenia at Skonto Stadium.
It was one of my favourite evenings in Riga so far. The atmosphere was lively, the match was exciting and the tickets were very affordable. There were five goals, plenty of tension and supporters of all ages. I even got Russian practice out of it!

Riga FC had lost the first match 2–0 in Armenia. Therefore, they needed a strong result in Riga to keep their hopes of qualifying alive. When I went to see the second leg last week, they managed to win 3–2 after scoring a dramatic late penalty.
Unfortunately, the victory was not enough to reach the next round. Still, the supporters kept singing and cheering for the team. As a result, the atmosphere remained lively and positive until the very end. Riga FC definitely has some truly dedicated fans!
Practising Russian at a football match
One thing that surprised me was how much Russian I heard around the stadium.
During the evening, I spoke with some Russian-speaking families. Their children train at the Riga FC academy. We talked about the match, the team and football in Riga.
The conversations happened naturally. Therefore, they felt very different from a classroom exercise.
Football also gives you an easy topic to discuss. I used phrases like:
- За кого вы болеете? – Which team do you support?
- Как вам матч? – What do you think of the match?
- Отличный гол! – Great goal!
- Кто ваш любимый игрок? – Who is your favourite player?
- Вы часто ходите на матчи? – Do you often go to matches?
- Жаль, что команда не прошла дальше. – It is a shame the team did not progress.
Affordable activity for everyone
Another advantage is the price. Tickets started at around €6 or €7. Therefore, it was a very affordable evening, especially for students who might be here in Riga on a budget.
Prices may vary depending on the match and seating area. However, local football is often much cheaper than attending matches in other European capitals.
I think this makes it a great activity for people who want to explore the city and its local life without spending too much.
