02 October 2015

Concerts, exhibitions, markets, open air movies and delicious local food – Kalnciema Quarter (Latvian: Kalnciema kvartāls) is highly appreciated by locals and just a pleasant 30 minute walk from the city center.

Not only the program is rich in variety, also the location is extraordinary: A huge backyard surrounded by 120 year old charming wooden houses and cottages spreads a unique atmosphere while rummaging through the stalls. Every Saturday throughout the whole year, regardless of the weather conditions, food vendors, local artists and private sellers set up their stands and offer authentic souvenirs, typical delicacies and even clothes or accessories.

After successfully purchasing little Latvian treasures you can enjoy delicious food in the hidden restaurant “Māja” -which means house in Latvian and that’s exactly the cozy and comfortable feeling it will give you. They mainly offer typical Baltic dishes like fish, vegetables, mushrooms and meat. The ingredients are from local farms and prepared in a traditional but creative manner.

Every Thursday you have to chance to see Latvian musicians or little festivals, depending on the weather they are open air concerts or take place in a little venue indoors. Kalnciema Quarter also hots art galleries, workshops, seminars and film or photo sessions. They events vary every week – you will surely find something interesting –  so if you are planning on going there take a look at the website and check the weekly schedule:
