Latvian National Opera – Special Summer Performances
Have you heard of the Latvian National Opera’s special programme of summer performances? This short season is an incredible chance to see some of the opera and ballet highlights of the previous year, and people flock from far and wide to experience the magic of a really beautifully produced show.
The season only runs for three weeks, and this year is set to close on 6 September. However, if you have not seen any of these performances yet, fear not! There is still chance to get your tickets and get involved with one of Riga’s most exciting cultural events. Come along and be amazed by some of the company’s finest talent. The versatility of the producers, musicians and performers involved is displayed in the sheer variety of shows available, from traditionally rendered classics to bold reinventions.
You might not know it, but Latvians have loved opera and theatre for a very long time, and this can be traced right back to the 18th century. At this time, travelling opera troupes were making their first appearances in Riga, and musical shows were increasingly popular. 1782 saw the opening of “Town German Theatre”, and the demand for theatre, ballet and opera exploded! It is even known that Richard Wagner, the celebrated German composer, was involved in producing shows here for several years.
In 1912, the Latvian National Opera first started performing, and in 1923, the company got its own home, and have remained there until this very day! This stunning piece of architecture, which absolutely must be seen, is a work of art in its own right. If you do decide to attend one of the late-summer performances, take some time beforehand to appreciate the fantastic grandeur and beauty of this building.
