The Online Dictionary Every Russian Learner Should Use
28 June 2023

Learning a new language can be an exciting and rewarding journey, and for those aspiring to master the Russian language, OpenRussian.org is a valuable Russian learning website that offers numerous benefits. This online platform provides a wealth of tools and resources specifically designed to support Russian learners at various levels. At its core, OpenRussian.org serves as a comprehensive Russian language dictionary. It offers English and German versions, catering to different language preferences. Here are a few features on OpenRussian.org that makes it such an indispensable tool for learning Russian:

1. Frequency lists of vocabulary

One of the key advantages of OpenRussian.org is its frequency list feature. Learners can filter vocabulary by the CEFR levels, making it easier to prioritize and focus on words that are most commonly used. This helps learners build a solid foundation of essential vocabulary. This can be found under the ‘My Words’ tab in the menu bar.

2. Learn proper sentence construction and usage of vocabulary with sample sentences

To further enhance language comprehension, OpenRussian.org offers a collection of sample sentences. These sentences provide real-life contexts in which words and phrases are used, aiding learners in grasping the practical application of the language. These sentences are handily laid out everywhere. There are many sample sentences on the homepage for those looking for something new to learn. There are also many sentences containing the term that is being looked up on the very search pages themselves and of course on pages pertaining to specific vocabulary entries.

3. Come back to vocabulary later

Another notable feature is the ability to star vocabulary and sample sentences. By creating an account, learners can bookmark specific terms and example sentences, allowing them to revisit and review them later. This feature promotes active engagement with the language and facilitates personalized learning, and is one that I personally use a lot!

4. Conjugations and declinations of all words

OpenRussian.org goes beyond basic vocabulary by providing additional resources for language learners. Every vocabulary entry covers essential aspects of each vocab such as verb conjugation, participles, imperatives, and cases. There are even related words and sayings for each vocabulary. These resources offer learners a comprehensive understanding of grammar and syntax, enabling them to construct accurate and meaningful sentences. This is probably my favorite part of OpenRussian.org, as I learn different applications of a word while I look it up.

Unfortunately, the platform currently does not have a mobile app, although it is anticipated to be released in the near future. Additionally, while the free version provides a wealth of resources, the paid version offers additional features such as audio recordings of sentences and flashcard quizzes. These additions can definitely be helpful for any learner, though the free version of the website itself would be more than sufficient to help you along your Russian learning journey.

Whether you are looking to expand your vocabulary, refine your grammar skills, or gain a deeper understanding of sentence structure, OpenRussian.org is a treasure trove of resources for Russian language learners, offering a multitude of benefits that enhance the learning experience. This platform provides an immersive and engaging environment for learners at all levels with its comprehensive vocabulary database and features. So, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced learner, embrace the opportunities provided by OpenRussian.org to master the Russian language. Check out other resources we recommend to help you master Russian here, here and here.

Happy learning!
