The Russian Moment, an international photo week
As many of you know, St. Petersburg is currently hosting the G20 summit, where the most important politicians in the world are discussing crucial global issues. At the same time, the city is also the location of the art project The Russian Moment (Русское Настоящее), a photo week organized by RIA Novosti (РИА Новости). The event was timed to coincide with the G20 summit.
Many artists from different countries got together in order to show their photos, which were taken in Russia during a two-week expedition ahead of the summit. The project focuses on Russians’ attitudes to the space they live in. Every photographer showed the theme in his own way, making each work very different from the others. The subjects are many, while the spaces range from Sakhalin island in the extreme East to Russian Western exclave Kalingrad.
The places chosen to display the photos are meant to illustrate the diversity of Russian spaces. For instance, there is an exhibition in the Marble Palace (Мраморный дворец) of the Russian Museum, and another one in the open air in the Alexandrovsky Garden (Александровский Сад). The Hermitage is also hosting lectures by Russian and international photographers. A “multimedia night” will take place tonight (September 6) in the Anna Akhmatova museum, on Liteyiny Prospekt.
Be sure not to miss this art project, and remember that it will run until Sunday (September 8). The best time to go there is in the evening, when you will also have the chance to see photo projections on the facades of the buildings.
