In Addition to AK-47, What Russian Weapons Do You Know?

The Military-Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineer and Signal Corps is not only the oldest military museum in Russia, but also one of the most significant military-historical museums in the world. The Museum collection occupies 13 rooms with a total area of over 17,000 square meters and 850,000 exhibits. Among the collection of Russian weapons, you will see artillery armaments and ammunition, rifles and cold steel, military-engineering equipment, signal means, banners, military uniforms and insignia from the XIV century up to our time. There is a room dedicated to the Kalashnikov AK-47 and its designer, Mikhail Kalashnikov.

Works of art reflecting Russia’s military past, portraits of Emperors, Grand Dukes, famed commanders, plus soldiers and officers who distinguished themselves in military operations are also on display. The Museum rooms are decorated with canvases by well-known Russian battle-artists. Many of the exhibited items are undoubtedly of great scientific value, and all of them are a part of Russian cultural heritage.

In the museum’s courtyard there is a permanent exhibition of cannons, tanks and missile systems of last generation. Even though it’s not allowed, you still might see children climbing on top of them.

There are many tours visiting Russian weapons during the day, and they can be given in English, German, Finnish and Arabic.

Before you plan your trip to the museum, make sure it is open, as they are closed every Monday and Tuesday, and sometimes also during other days of the week.
