Au revoir Riga!

Au revoir Riga!
24 December 2024

It was an absolute pleasure to rediscover Riga this year, especially since winter offered me a perspective vastly different from the one I had the previous year, marked by sunny terraces and spritz cocktails. This time, the city welcomed me in its winter version, with streets illuminated by Christmas decorations and mulled wine becoming the perfect comforting drink to ward off the cold. This change of season allowed me to experience the city in a more intimate and reflective way.

My stay in Riga materialized through two articles that encapsulate what this experience brought me. The first delves into a more abstract yet fascinating subject: the Russian concept of тоска (Toska). This word, challenging to translate precisely, evokes a deep melancholy, an inner void, or existential ennui, while also being rich with different meanings depending on the context. By exploring it, I sought to understand what this sensation—both universal and yet so uniquely Russian—could signify in the context of my time in Latvia. The word тоска allowed me to reflect on concepts of solitude, nostalgia, and aspiration, often difficult to express in other languages but which gain profound resonance when living in a country where this language is spoken, and emotions are sometimes less veiled.

The second article focused on ways to practice Russian outside the classroom, by seeking authentic interactions with the language in daily life. This approach enabled me to move beyond mere grammatical study and immerse myself in informal conversations with locals, soaking in their linguistic culture. It was a way to engage with Russian in a lively and dynamic manner, far from textbooks, while confronting the reality of this rich and complex language.

Cheers to Riga and Latvia !

Alongside these cultural explorations, my time in Riga was above all about forging meaningful human connections. I had the chance to meet open and warm residents, whether during class discussions, in cafés, or at cultural events. This contact with Latvians allowed me to appreciate the richness of their culture and to feel the openness that is rarely found in other parts of Europe. The kindness of the people, their curiosity about others, and their willingness to share and engage left a deep impression on me. These small encounters were one of the highlights of my stay and a true motivator to learn more about the country.

Through these moments, I also had the opportunity to immerse myself in the soul of the city, its traditions, and its unique traits. Riga transforms with the seasons, and winter holds a special magic, with its Christmas markets, concerts, and outdoor events—even when the cold is biting. This ability to blend tradition and modernity, to be welcoming while remaining true to its history, is something I greatly appreciated.

In conclusion, my stay in Riga was a profoundly enriching experience, both culturally and personally. I learned to understand new concepts, immerse myself in a different culture, and, most importantly, meet wonderful people who helped create unforgettable memories. It is with a sense of gratitude and nostalgia that I leave this city, but I hold onto the hope of returning one day. In the meantime, I wish everyone a very happy holiday season, filled with warmth, joy, and discovery. May it be an opportunity for each of you to cultivate precious moments, both simple and profound.
