Traveling from Riga couldn’t be easier — hop on a direct train or bus, and in just three to four hours, you’ll find yourself immersed in the heart of Latvia’s Russian-speaking world.

Perfect for a spontaneous adventure or a relaxed cultural escape, Daugavpils invites you to discover a side of Latvia that few get to see. Here are the can’t-miss spots in Daugavpils!

Rothko Art Centre (Rothko Museum)

Daugavpils is the birthplace of the renowned abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. The Rothko Art Centre, housed within the 19th-century Daugavpils Fortress, displays a collection of Rothko’s paintings, including some of his early works, alongside contemporary art exhibitions and interactive installations. Beyond the art, the center offers workshops and cultural programs that inspire creativity and connection to the city’s artistic heritage.

Daugavpils Fortress

Step back in time at the impressive Daugavpils Fortress, one of the best-preserved 19th-century military fortifications in Northern Europe. Built between 1810 and 1878, this sprawling complex once guarded strategic routes and now serves as a captivating historical landmark. Wander through its massive walls, explore the underground tunnels, and admire the unique architecture that blends military utility with artistic design. The fortress isn’t just a relic — it’s a living cultural hub hosting exhibitions, festivals, and events year-round.

Church Hill

Church Hill is one of Daugavpils’ most iconic and picturesque neighborhoods, offering a serene and spiritual atmosphere amid the city’s urban landscape. This historic area is known for its beautiful and architecturally diverse churches, including the striking St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, the majestic Daugavpils Orthodox Cathedral, and several other religious landmarks. The hill provides panoramic views of the city, making it a favorite spot for both locals and visitors seeking tranquility and inspiration. Strolling through Church Hill, you’ll experience the deep-rooted faith and cultural mosaic that define Daugavpils, as well as charming parks and quiet streets perfect for leisurely exploration.

Nature Parks and Green Spaces

For those who love the outdoors, Daugavpils offers a wealth of natural beauty just waiting to be explored. From scenic river bends to tranquil lakeside promenades, the region’s parks provide the perfect escape into nature.

Daugavas Loki Nature Park, also known as the Bends of the Daugava, is a true gem for nature lovers. This protected Natura 2000 area showcases dramatic river meanders, lush forests, and observation towers.

Closer to the city, Lielais Stropu Lake offers a refreshing retreat with its long promenade, sandy beach, and forested trails. Perfect for swimming, cycling, or simply relaxing by the water, the area is family-friendly and lively, especially during summer. Nearby, the exciting Tarzāns Adventure Park provides fun aerial obstacle courses, adding a dash of adrenaline to your nature day.

For a quieter, more historic experience, Jaunsventes Park and the adjoining Svente Lake invite visitors to stroll among diverse tree species and enjoy peaceful lakeside views. This 19th-century manor park is ideal for slow walks, birdwatching, and soaking up the serene countryside atmosphere.

Not far from there, Jezupova Manor Park offers a botanical retreat with rare tree species, charming footbridges, and remnants of manor architecture. It’s the perfect spot for romantic walks, nature photography, or a tranquil picnic surrounded by history and greenery.
