What an Experience! Goodbye Saint Petersburg!

Great city, great experience, great time! Wow, it feels like I just arrived in Saint Petersburg for my semester and adventure abroad and now the 3 months are already over. At the beginning, I was so excited to call Russia my new home for the next couple of weeks, to leave my homeland Austria behind wasn’t that easy but I still can’t believe how fast the time just passed by. In my very last blog, I would like to write a little bit about my experiences and impressions of my time here.

What did I expect of my stay in Russia?

I am studying International business relations, and in the course of our studies, we have the opportunity to do an internship abroad in the fifth semester. Fortunately, I already attended a language course in Moscow for 3 weeks this year in July so I already got to know a little bit more about the culture and typical habits in a Russian megacity. Many friends of mine who have already been to Saint Petersburg, the Venice of the North, just told me very positive things about this city and when I got the acceptance as an intern at Liden & Denz there, I was super happy!

I shared an apartment with a friend of mine directly at Nevsky Prospect, because she got a placement in the same company and we thought it would be more comfortable to live in the center and share the price of the flat. On the first days, everything was new and we had to get used to our surroundings, like where’s the next supermarket, our bus station, the working place or the fitness studio. However, after a few days we settled down very well in our new hometown and through our language course every morning at Liden & Denz, we found so many new friends who made our start way easier.

What was my favorite part about Saint Petersburg?

Saint Petersburg is an amazing and gorgeous city in the northeast of Europe and I would definitely recommend everybody to visit this place at least once in a lifetime! “Piter”, that’s the way locals call their city, has many possibilities for filling in your free time, despite the usually very wintry temperatures. You can visit one of the many famous museums, such as the Russian Museum or the Hermitage. You can walk across the Castle Bridge, take a stop at the Vodka Museum, paint your own Matrjoschka, visit the amber room in Pushkin, the magnificent fountains at Peterhof or you could take a boat trip across the canals and Neva River. You’ll definitely never get bored!

In conclusion, I can say, that I am so damn grateful that I had the chance to do this amazing experience abroad. I made so many new friends from all over the world and I try my best to stay in touch with them. That’s what I really liked best about my stay. I got new friends from Italy, Switzerland, India, England, America, Poland, Colombia, and so on: That is unique. Of course, my Russian got better too. You cannot compare studying Russian at university and living in the country for a while. I really improved my Russian rapidly there, because you are confronted with the Russian language in all situations.

Do svidanja Saint Petersburg, I am sure that I will visit you again in 2017!

This blog was brought to you by Daniela Danzinger, student and intern at Liden & Denz!
