Moscow Cat Museum
Even though I’m not a huge fan of the cat-dog dichotomy I must confess to being a cat person. My orientation is quite well known here at our office at Liden & Denz in Saint Petersburg, maybe because I often press important matters such as more cats on our Instagram account (@Lidenz).
I took a quick look at our blog and found out that cats have been covered before. Embarrassingly enough, one is written by me. The blogposts cover themes such as The Cat Theatre in Moscow, The Cat House in Riga, The Cat Café in Saint Petersburg and last but not least The Cats at Museums in Saint Petersburg. The aforementioned Cat Museum in Saint Petersburg is surprisingly not the only Cat Museum in Russia. There’s also a museum in Moscow, which has been open for more than 20 years (!).
The museum is quite an example of what guidebooks like to call “off the beaten path”. If that does not bother you, and you’re in to cats this place will surely be interesting.
Московский Музей Кошки or the Moscow Cat Museum is a wild mix between exhibition centre, museum and event venue for all things related to cats. The museum sprung out of the fact that many artists seemed to take an interest in cats and thus the idea of collecting this art in a special museum was born.
The museum also organizes contests for kids from all over Russia in categories such as “Best cat picture”. The winners of these contests will see their artwork exhibited at the museum.
No true Cat Museum is not complete without the real deal. I’m of course speaking about the two cat-curators Bonnie and Massia, two Siberians living at the museum and making sure everything is ok.
Getting there:
The museum is at 109/1 Rublyovskoye Shosse / Рублёвское шоссе in Moscow some 300 meters from Metro station Molodezhnaya / Молодежная.
