Squeaky-clean Russian TV
The recent incident in which Russian TV channel TVT censored a mild swear-word caused great hilarity among TV viewers.
Russian law states certain expletives, as laid down in an official list, must be bleeped out on television. A very sensible law in today’s world, many would be inclined to comment. However, during the recent airing of the 6+ rated, Soviet classic, “Garage”, TVT curiously decided to censor the Russian word “хреновины”, deeming it too vulgar for a Friday night. The word very roughly equates to the English fiddlesticks and bleeping it out left many viewers who were unfamiliar with the film guessing as which word had been censored.
As one might expect, comments have been varied but whilst many Russians are unhappy with how commonplace swearing has become in the media, this particular incident of overzealous censorship prompted ridicule from viewers.
