05 September 2024

With Riga enjoying the last weeks of summer sun, you may be wondering where you can go to cool off. No worries! In Riga, there is a wide array of indoor and outdoor swimming options.

Jūrmala Beach

Jūrmala is a famous seaside resort with a long stretch of sandy beaches along the Gulf of Riga. The beaches are clean, the water is generally calm, and it’s a popular destination during the summer months. There are also cafes, restaurants, and recreational facilities nearby. Jūrmala is about 20km away from Riga and you can get a bus or a 30 minute train from the central train station.

Ķīšezers is a large lake located in the Mežaparks neighborhood. There are designated swimming areas, and it’s a great place for those who prefer freshwater swimming. The area is surrounded by greenery, making it a pleasant spot for a day out. Mežaparks is on the 11 tram route, which you can catch outside Liden & Denz.

Lucavsala

Lucavsala is an island in the Daugava River and  has a popular public beach where you can swim during the summer. The island also offers recreational facilities like playgrounds, sports fields, and picnic areas.

Vecāķi Beach

About 10 km north of the city center,  Vecāķi is another popular beach located along the Gulf of Riga. It’s less crowded than Jūrmala. The beach has basic facilities and is accessible by public transport.

Indoor Swimming Pools:

If you want to swim more seriously or when it’s raining, Riga also has a wide range of indoor swimming options.
