As part of your Russian learning journey, it is almost certain you will make friends or have colleagues which you will speak to via WhatsApp or Facebook. Although it might be tempting to display your impressive knowledge of Russian vocabulary and spelling, why not text like a true Russian (and save yourself a lot of time trying to understand the Russian keyboard!) and use the following useful phrases.

Everyday useful phrases

  • мб – может быть (maybe)

For example: Вы придете на вечеринку? Мб 

Will you come to the party? Maybe

 

  • кмк – как мне кажется (in my opinion)                                                                                                     

For example: кмк скоро будет дождь

In my opinion it will rain soon

 

  • спс – спасибо (thanks) 

For example: спс за торт

Thanks for the cake

 

  • слу – слушай (listen)

For example: слу, пойдем сегодня на вечеринку?

listen, shall we go to the party?

 

  • ща – сейчас (now)

For example: ща, я иду в парк

Now I am going to the park

 

  • оч / не оч – очень /не очень (very / not very)

For example: это далеко? не оч

Is it far? Not very

Occasions

  • ДР – день рождения (birthday)

For example: сегодня у меня ДР

Today is my birthday

 

НГ – Новый год (New Year)

For example: есть ли у вас планы на НГ?

Do you have plans for the New Year?

Emotions

  • Хз – хрен знает (I don’t know)

For example: у нас сегодня есть урок математики? Хз

Do we have a maths class today? I don’t know

 

  • Омг (Oh my God) 

For example: сегодня будет шторм. Омг!

Today there is going to be a storm. Omg!

 

  • Ппц – пипец (Oh my God)

For example: Ппц. Я опять забыл свою сумку

Omg. I forgot my bag again

 

  • Норм – нормально (ok/good)

For example: как дела? Норм

How are you? Good

Abbreviations

  • МЧ – молодой человек (boyfriend)

For example: Я иду в кино с моим МЧ

I am going to the cinema with my boyfriend 

 

  • Вел – велосипед (bike)

For example: Как вы добираетесь до школы? На веле.

How are you getting to school? By bike

 

  • Комп – компьютер (computer)

For example: Мне нужно написать эссе на компе.

I have to write an essay on my computer

 

  • Выхи – выходные (weekend)

For example: В выхи мы собираемся на пляж

At the weekend we are going to the beach
